Our Dream House - Page 1
Last winter after Elise was born, we decided that our current home was a little small for us 3. At that time we considered buying a larger home. After looking around for about a month we came to the conclusion that the only way we were going to get everything we wanted was to build our own home - our Dream House. And so the story begins - we welcome you to join us on this exciting journey!
March 2004
Joseph being an Engineer helped when it came to designing how the home would look, but we still had to pick out a lot for our home, and we had to make sure the house we were wanting would fit on the lot. We chose a newer subdivision that is only a 6 1/2 minute drive from our existing subdivision, and with a great location too. The lot we selected was kind of up on a hill (which is what we wanted), and with its property line extending all the way to adjacent woods & a corn field in the back. It makes it seem like we're out in the country when actually we're only minutes from shopping complexes, the Interstate, etc. There are deer, wild turkeys, and other wildlife around - we like that.
Here is a photo (looking west) showing a portion of the empty lot with the woods behind it. The far left part of the picture shows a neighboring house under construction.

Final design of the floorplan was completed and approved by us on April 16, 2004 - as an example here is the first floor plan (the blueprint is a little hard to read but can give you an idea). The first floor living space is 1964 square feet and the 3-car garage is 837 square feet. The living space of the second floor is actually bigger than the first floor since it includes the space above the garage.
![]() Much of April was also spent making decisions about the numerous features of the house, things like: all flooring; windows; kitchen countertops, cabinets, and appliances; roofing; brick; fireplaces; utilities; doors; trim; crown molding; bathtubs and showers; faucets; sinks; alarm system; lighting; electrical; retaining wall; and the list goes on and on...
May 2004
After the final estimates were in, it was time to fill out all the paperwork. We also continued to look around, go to more open houses, and get more ideas.

After weeks of delay due to heavy rains we were finally able to break ground! Here are some photos as they begin to dig our basement.
